Welcome to spring! For GFOAT members, the change in season means returning to Austin to attend the Spring Institute. The Spring Institute is GFOAT’s traditional annual gathering of the membership from across Texas. Other opportunities to meet have been added to the organization’s schedule of events over the years, including the fall conference beginning in the early 1990’s. No other event, however, carries as many memories for GFOAT members of long standing as the Spring Institute. If you are a first-time attendee, plan to make your own memories at this year’s conference and build on them in the years to come.
Are you arriving in Austin early to play in the pre-conference golf tournament? If you are, then perhaps you are wondering about the person whose name is associated with the tournament. Who was Bruce Testa? Bruce was an accountant by trade and a good friend to many. He served as Assistant City Controller for Dallas and City Controller for Plano and was known, by all who worked with him as a true professional who was never too busy to help others. Bruce’s love of golf was well known to those who knew him. In 1999, GFOAT chose to name the tournament in his honor after his death.
I hope you plan to join us for dinner Monday evening at County Line on the Lake. The Monday evening social event at the Spring Institute is a highlight of the conference. Many types of social events have been held during the Spring Institute, including the hilarious programs at Esther’s Follies on 6th Street, special museum nights, and even train rides! Often, the most memorable evenings are spent at places like County Line where we can enjoy good food and each other’s company in typical Austin fashion.
Of course, we come to the Spring Institute to learn. It is as important to learn from each other as it is to learn from the leaders of the conference sessions. Make those connections at the conference, and maintain them after the conference ends so that the next time you see them, you greet them as friends and colleagues.
